“Booing” your neighbors is a fun, easy Halloween tradition. You secretly leave a small bag or basket filled with Halloween treats on a neighbor’s doorstep, along with a You’ve Been Booed printable explaining how they can keep the fun going.

What Does “You’ve Been Booed” Mean?
If you haven’t heard of this Halloween tradition before, the idea is pretty simple.
You put together a little Halloween surprise for a neighbor, friend, or family member. It can be as simple as a bag of candy or a few inexpensive Halloween goodies.
Then, when they aren’t looking, you leave the treats at their door along with a You’ve Been Booed sign and instructions.
The recipient puts the sign on their door or in a window so everyone knows they’ve already been booed. Then they choose another neighbor or two and secretly boo them.
Before long, the Halloween fun starts making its way through the whole neighborhood!

How to Boo Your Neighbors
First, download and print your You’ve Been Booed printables. Regular printer paper works perfectly for the instruction sheet, although I like using cardstock for the signs, door hanger, and gift tags because it makes them a little sturdier.
Next, put together your Halloween treats.
You don’t have to spend much money on this. A few pieces of candy and some inexpensive Halloween goodies are plenty. You could also fill a small Halloween Boo basket with things like stickers, pencils, glow sticks, temporary tattoos, popcorn, cookies, or other little treats.
Add one of the printable tags and include copies of the sign and instructions so your neighbor can continue the tradition.
Then comes the fun part.
Secretly leave your surprise at their front door, ring the doorbell, and make your escape!
What to Put in a Halloween Boo Basket
Your Boo basket can be as simple or elaborate as you’d like. If you’re booing a family with children, candy and small Halloween toys are always easy choices.
You could include Halloween candy, individually packaged snacks, glow sticks, stickers, pencils or crayons, small toys, Halloween socks, activity books, or homemade treats if you know the family well.
You don’t even need an actual basket. A Halloween gift bag, a paper lunch bag decorated by the kids, or a small plastic pumpkin works just as well.
The surprise is what makes it fun.
A Fun Halloween Tradition for Kids
One of my favorite things about this activity is that the fun isn’t just in getting the treats.
Kids get to sneak up to a neighbor’s house, leave the surprise, and try to get away without being spotted.
And because the recipient is encouraged to boo someone else, one little treat bag can turn into a neighborhood-wide Halloween tradition.
You can also use these printables to boo grandparents, cousins, friends, teachers, or coworkers. It doesn’t have to be limited to your neighborhood.
When Should You Start Booing Your Neighbors?
Anytime in October works, but starting earlier in the month gives everyone more time to participate and pass the tradition along.
If you’d like to involve several families, consider starting during the first or second week of October.
That gives your You’ve Been Booed signs plenty of time to start popping up on doors throughout the neighborhood before Halloween arrives.
